Fabric Care & Furniture Cleaning Tips

When considering the purchase of upholstered products, look for specific information regarding fabric cleaning methods recommended by the Joint Industry Standards Committee. Manufacturers, based on information from their fabric sources and laboratory testing, add an alphabetical symbol to each new fabric swatch denoting cleaning method. Symbols and their meanings adopted by the Joint Committee are as follows:

Code “W”

Clean only with water based shampoo or foam upholstery cleaner. Do not overwet. Do not use solvents to spot clean. Pile fabrics may require brushing to restore appearance. Cushion covers should not be removed and laundered.

Code “S”

Clean only with dry cleaning solvent. Do not saturate. Do not use water. Pile fabrics may require brushing to restore appearance. Cushion covers should not be removed and dry cleaned.

Code “SW”

Clean with shampoo, foam or dry cleaning solvents as desired. Do not saturate with liquid. Pile fabrics may require brushing to restore appearance. Cushion covers should not be removed and dry cleaned.

Code “X”

Do not clean with either water or solvent based cleaner. Use vacuuming or light brushing only.

It is extremely important to pre-test your cleaning method on a hidden area of the fabric to determine if the colors bleed or if the fabric shrinks. When in doubt, seek the help of a professional furniture cleaner.

Routine Care

Properly cared for furniture wears longer and will bring you many years of comfort and enjoyment. Simple directions for the regular care of your upholstery include vacuuming or brushing your upholstery with soft bristle brush weekly. Use a professional furniture cleaning service for overall soiled condition. For vinyl — sponge with warm mild soapy water. Remove solution with a clean, damp soft cloth. Never remove cushion covers even if they have zippers.

Leather Care & Cleaning

The following information will help you care for and maintain your leather product:

  • Avoid placing your furniture in direct sunlight as this may cause your leather to fade over a period of time. ......Do not place in windows or under skylights.

  • Try to maintain at least two feet between your furniture and heating sources. Prolonged exposure to heat can cause your leather to dry out.

  • Dust with a clean, dry cloth, or use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum. If a spot needs special attention, ......a damp cloth or sponge soaked in lukewarm mild soapy water can be used. Dry with a woolen cloth and wait ......until completely dry before using.

  • Never allow spills to set.

  • Never use aggressive substances such as stain removers, cleaning solvents, turpentine, shoe polish, ammonia water, or any other type of chemical solution on your leather.

Note: When cleaning leather work in a circular motion from the outer edge of the spill and work toward the middle.

Repairing Top Grain Leather

If you should scratch, burn, rip or cut your leather furniture, it can be easily repaired by a professional leather technician. In most cases, your leather furniture can be repaired so that the restoration cannot be detected.

A Quick Way to Pick Up Cat Hair

Use Lint Roller on Lamp Shades

My vacuum attachment doesn't work on cloth lamp shades, so I dust the shades with a lint roller.
